In an increasingly globalised world and in particular during a humanitarian mission we meet people of diverse cultural backgrounds and their system of value. Even under everyday conditions cultural differences in behaviour may lead to irritation and confusion when you experience strange behaviour and have no context for understanding the foreign environment. During a humanitarian mission we do not only meet people with a foreign cultural background – we meet people under absolutely exceptional circumstances. Needless to say – so does your vis-à-vis.
„An enourmous amout of compassion - and a thick skin“ are key factors for a successful mission. In other words: personal qualities such as high empathic capabilities, cultural sensitivity and high frustration tolerance are the main criteria that determine success or failure of the operation. This seminar not only aims to raise cultural awareness towards foreign cultural values systems but also to intensivly explore your own culture imprint such as your own societal values and standards. We would like to give you useful suggestions, tips and advice how to estabilsh a dialogue with your counterpart, thereby creating a wider understanding of the communication processes that leads to mutual understanding, comprehension and trust.
Seminar content: basics of intercultural competence, prevention of „culture clashes“, handling of culture shock, observation exercises, simulations, team developement, team roles and responsibilities, time for country-specific peculiarities
Target audience: humanitarian aid workers (multidiciplinary)
Language: German ( a very good command of the German language is needed)
